Haiti - Back Home
As I reflect on my days in Haiti, I am excited about all that God used us to do. Over three million meals were served though churches, missionaries and other Christian groups with food God provided through Convoy of Hope. 800 - 5 gallon water filtration systems were prepared and 2 - corporate water filtration systems installed that will serve clean water to the community for years to come. A 7200 square foot warehouse was organized with flow of supplies becoming smoother and more efficient. Not to mention all medical aid, numerous opportunities to pray with others and much more.
I will also remember the many people I met - people like Paul, Nick and Bob, Convoy of Hope Staff that were in Haiti for nearly a month dedicating their time and talents without any time off. I will remember Dr Torres and her medical team that tireless performed life saving surgeries in subpar conditions. And I will remember the people of Haiti, who have suffered so much. Everyone I met or ministered along side were selfless, anointed and effective. It was such a privilege to minister in such a needy place with dedicated, Christ followers. And it was a total honor to see people drawn to Jesus because of our efforts.
Thank you Jesus for it all. I look forward to the next such opportunity.

I Want To Go To Haiti - by Annette
Haiti - Day 9
Later, I went to the less than ideal, under supplied medical clinic / ER / OR. During my time there, I had the opportunity to observe two surgeries. First, a man with a broken arm that had healed incorrectly. The doctors really had to pull hard on the bones to get them back into place. Second, a paraplegic with bed sores that went all the way to the bone on three parts of his lower body. The surgeon said he would of died within a couple of days if they had not operated on him to get all the dead infected muscle out. His chances of survival are not high, but his chance at eternity is wide open. After the surgery, the doctors, medical staff, about eight of his family, and myself gathered around him and prayed for God to minister to him. It was a powerful moment.
We start our two day journey home tomorrow. Our trip takes us from Port-au-Prince to Santo Domingo to Orlando to Indianapolis. I am really going to miss ministering in Haiti, but I am looking forward to coming home to be with all of you. Thank you again to all you have prayed and given to make this powerful, anointed opportunity occur.

Haiti - Day 8
Our purpose for going to Quisqueya Chapel is to install a Culligan Water Filtration System on the compound. This system will provide clean drinking water at a rate of 14,0000 gallons in a 24 hour period. Quisqueya Chapel will now be able to add clean water distribution as part of their ministry. It will help with reduction of diease in the area and give the church another opportunity to demonstrate the love of Christ. This is the 2nd water filtration system we installed this week, with another coming soon.
Again, thank you Jesus for another great day of ministry. I have had the opportunity to be anointed of God and see awesome results. Please keep praying for the need is great -- but our God is bigger.

Haiti - Day 7
I spent time at the medical clinic just down the hill from the warehouse. Every part of the facility buzzed with activity. Doctors, nurses and other medical personnel were assisting with wounds, infections and operations in subpar facilities. As Mike and I took supply orders from the doctors, it was a privilege to get what they needed from our warehouse. Thank you Jesus.
Thank you for all who have prayed. It truly is paying off.

Haiti - Day 6
As church ended, we made our way back down the trail to our vehicle. From the side of our vehicle, we handed out 200 hygiene packs in about 30 minutes. The pastor organized and decided who got packs, one per family. It was so cool to assist the church, show love to the people, and represent Jesus well.
Before we left, I had the opportunity to play pass with the nerf football I brought, give away candy to the kids and show pictures of my family to all who would look. All this was done in an attempt to connect with the people in love. What an awesome time of ministry!
Now I am watching updates of the super bowl on an on again off again wifi signal -- Colts 10 / Saints 6. I miss watching the game with all of you, but it is a very small sacrifice that is not worth comparing to the opportunity to minister here in Haiti.
Thank you again to all of you who have prayed, especially for Bob and Nick - they are both feeling much better. God bless and have a great night.
"Haiti Day 5" written on Day 6
Please pray for Nick and Bob, two of the Convoy of Hope team members, they have been sick, but somewhat better. We are seeing great results in the midst of this devastation. Thank you for your love and support.

Haiti - Day 4
At about 2:30 p.m., Paul came by and asked us to go with him into Port au Prince. We got into the truck and off we went. During the twenty minute drive into Port au Prince, we passed by the coast line, some beautiful rolling hills and then a distinct smell. "What is that smell," I asked Paul. He said that it was a combination of the sulfur lake near by mixed in with smell of decomposing bodies in the mass grave up the hill to our right. In the distance, we could see heavy equipment sitting on a hill that had been used to create the final resting place for thousands.
As we progressed into the city, every so often we would come across tent cities. These make shift communities numbered in the dozens and sometimes into the thousands. The randonness of the earthquake devastation was surprising. A three or four story structure that was completely pancaked may be sitting next to a store that was now open and functioning. The streets were filled with people: a few beggars, some shoppers and vendors of every kind. And the traffic was the worst of any country I have ever traveled. Our two hour trip into and out of the city turned into about four due the grindlock. We arrived back in time for dinner and an short evening of reflection and fellowship.
I am starting to next a feel of the needs that Convoy of Hope is meeting and the structure it is fine tuning to meet these needs. I look forward to another great day tomorrow. Thank you to all who have sent me and are praying for me.
Lord, here are we, use us (me in Haiti and you in prayer).

Haiti - Day 3
Today has been fun, tomorrow is going to be amazingly anointed and effective. No matter what I do over the next few days, I trust God to use me. "All that belongs to the Father is mine, Jesus said (John 16:15a). My entire week belongs to you.

Haiti Missions Trip Updates
I am so excited about this opportunity for Carl. Thank you so much Pastor Walt and our family at Faith Church. We are truly blessed to be a part of a church that has a heart to serve. Thank you for your support, prayers, financial blesses and so on and so on. God has filled me with such a peace. His word is truly manna from heaven for me. Yesterday I read 1 Samuel 10:6-7 "The Spirit of the Lord will come on you in power, and you will prophesy with them and you will be changed into a different person. Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you."

Haiti Bound: Day 1
Day 1: After getting a call around 11:00am today that put my status to active, Tim Lusher and I left for the first leg of my journey. This section of the trip involved eight hours and five hundred miles in the car. Our drive has brought us to Green Stay Hotel and Suites in Springfield, MO. Tim has been so gracious to drive me here. He will be making the tract back to Anderson in the morning.
Tomorrow, I will meet up with other leaders for orientation at the Convoy of Hope facilities, then catch a flight out of Branson, MO to Orlando -- from there to Santa Domingo -- then to Port au Prince. When I arrive at Port au Prince, I will be assisting in various ways with logisitcs and flow of aid at the many points of distrbution Convoy of Hope has in the city. It will be a awesome time of serving others in Jesus name.
As I sit at this hotel lobby computer, I am uncertain all that lies ahead, but I am certain it is God's time and plan. I am grateful to God and all who have given of their time, finances, and especially prayers to make this ministry opportunity possible.
My task is to represent Jesus well. I want to fulfill Christ command when he stated, "If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. (John 15:7-8)
Lord, help me to remain in you, so that I will bear much fruit and bring glory to your name.

The Value of a Penny
"Great dad, I want you to take it to Haiti and give it to someone in need.” he said as he placed the penny in my hand. Wow ... now I was humbled.
When I depart I will take that penny and hundreds of dollars that other generous people have given, and use it so that others can see the love of Jesus demonstrated through acts of compassion. My passion is that those in need will sense the love of Jesus with every bottle of water or meal given. Why is this important that we represent Christ well? -- because he is "... the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6b).
Spencer's heart to give reminds us that every gift, resource and talent no matter how small, can be used to glorify God ... even a penny.

Stinky Feet
"What's that smell," I wondered. A quick look around my bedroom did not produce any obvious objects of odor. Then, I realized; it was my shoes. The stench of my sweaty feet had permeated the inner fabric of my footwear. "Whew!" Jesus, as well, had an experience with stinky feet at a dinner with his disciples; "he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. (John 13:3-4)Jesus, their Lord and teacher, took time to wash these sandal wearing, dust covered, nasty feet of twelve grown men. Why? Jesus explains, "I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them." (John 13:15-17)
Jesus demonstrated for us that loving and serving one another is a key to a blessed life. Jesus seals the deal when he states, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:34-35)
Lord, help us to show our love for you by loving and serving others -- even if we must take care of someone's stinky feet.

Extravagant Worship
She expressed her love extravagantly and with much personal sacrifice. The skeptical thoughts of others and ridicule did not deter her. Jesus was worth her adoration and worship.
Lord, teach us to love you with Mary-like extravagant worship -- you truly deserve it.

Faith Filled
"Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask." (John 11:21-22)
What is she saying -- does she truly believe that Jesus can do something for her brother now? Jesus responds. "Your brother will rise again." (John 11:23) Shortly after their conversation, Jesus goes to the tomb and brings her brother back to life.
Each day I have a choice to put my full faith in Jesus to guide, provide and do great things for and through me. Martha seemed to have this full faith in Jesus. Lord, help us to have the same.
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11:25-26)

Happy All The Time
I'm in right out right up right down right happy all the time.
Since Jesus Christ came in -- and washed away my sins.
I'm in right out right up right down right happy all the time.
I love singing this church song with my kids. These simple lyrics have deep meaning. It states that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, comes into our lives and transforms us. When we invite him in he gives us "life, and ... (life) to the full." (John 10:10b)
He loves us so much that he protects us so that we "shall never perish; no one can snatch (us) out of (his) hand. My Father, who has given (you) to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch (us) out of my Father's hand." (John 10:28b-29)
Thank you father that you are in me, beside me, above me, below me and all around me. Anoint me to introduce you to others so that Jesus Christ can come in -- and washed away their sins too.

Clean Your Room
"Dad, why do I have to clean my room" is a phrase I will occasionally hear from my kids. I can easily get frustrated with them for their delayed obedience and complaining. If they would just listen and obey immediately with the right attitude, it would make things much easier for them. Luckily, I am blessed with fairly compliant children.God desires us to listen and obey as well. It is simple, but sometimes we make it hard. The blind man was faced with a choice to listen and obey when Jesus told him, "Go, ... wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word means Sent). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing." (John 9:7)
He did not say, "Why can't you heal me here?" or "Can't you see I am blind and your going to make me walk to the pool of Siloam!" No, he simply listened and obeyed, and then Jesus completed the miracle. When questioned about it he stated the obvious, "The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see." (John 9:11)
Lord, help us to listen and obey, so we can truly see you and tell others.

God is so Cool.
Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." (John 8:10-11)
Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (John 8:12b)
Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:34-36)
We have the privilege of being forgiven of our sin, connected to God (who has a bright future for us) and receiving complete and total freedom from a life of sin. Wow -- God is so cool!

Homework
Jesus teaching profoundly makes us better. When asked about where his powerful, life changing teaching originated, "Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me. (John 7:16). He went to the perfect source, God the father, that enabled him to teach with such authority.
Lord, help us to teach your truth ... in your name ... with great authority. I know it will bring the best results in people's lives.

Bread and Fish
Jesus also faced a overwhelming tasks of feeding 1000's of people one day. He took the limited resources available, "five small barley loaves of bread and two small fish" (John 6:9) and began to share with the multitudes. He and his disciples miraculously feed each person all they wanted. The need should of overwhelmed him, but it did not.

Serving Others
Being surrounded by selfless people , reminds me what Jesus said of his mission, "I seek not to please myself but him who sent me" (John 5:30b). He truly exemplifies the ultimate in selfless dedication to others. Lord, help me to recognize more of the many opportunities you put before me to serve others and please you.

Living Water for Haiti
"Everyone who drinks this water (from the well) will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (John 4:13-14)
As Christ-centered relief volunteers and resources flow in massive amounts from churches in the coming days, I am confident that lives will be saved -- not only from physical death due to disease and hunger, but eternal death due to the anointed assistance given with love and compassion in Jesus name. I pray that the "spring of water welling up to eternal life" will be in as much demand as any fresh water that can temporary satisfy physical thirst.

Potential
John the Baptist is one who had reached his fullest potential for God and fully understood his purpose. When John the Baptist was asked why Jesus was beginning to have a bigger following than he, his wise response was, "A man can receive only what is given him from heaven" (John 3:27). His desire was to assist others in reaching the fullest potential that had been given to them from heaven and in turn become dedicated Christ followers.
Lord, help us to understand and fulfill our purpose and help others to do the same.

Home Sweet Home
Children's laughter, unfinished repair projects, milk mustache kisses, dirty dishes, family game times, unfolded laundry and a well used swing set are all things that make my house a home. I love my calling as a pastor and the privilege I have to work at my church everyday. I look forward to weekend trips away, dinner at a friends house and regular, (ok, sometimes occasional) trips to the gym. But, what I enjoy the most is being home ... because home is where I spend time with those I cherish the most in this world.Jesus enjoyed his home as well. John 2 tells us he had a "zeal for his house that consume(d) him." Is his zeal for his house, the temple, so strong because of the ornate instruments of gold or the wise priests who resided there? No, in part, it was because God, his father, dwelled in that place ... the one Jesus cherished the most.
Lord, dwell in me and my home. Help me to cherish you the most.

Come and See
As a Christ follower, I desperately want all the people I know to, "come and see" Jesus. I only hope that people can "come and see" the love and character of Jesus demonstrated in me ... and in you.

Ferrero Rocher (Mmmm good)
"What in the world could be inside?", I thought with amazement as a gazed upon the large box sitting in my office. As I opened the enormous shipment I was astonished to discover 12 cases of Ferrero Rocher chocolates -- over 570 pieces of chocolate. This tasty gift came from Elaine, a precious 84 year old woman from Munster, Indiana. Friday, January 16, 2009
Expired
I could not believe it!As I tried to clock in at my part time job, I discovered that my driver's license was six days past its expiration date. Since my part time job involves delivering pizza, my amused boss just laughed and told me I could not work tonight. I thought in my embarrassment, "Whoever looks at their driver's license?" and "Why do you have to have your driver's license renewed so often?"
a
As I settled in to have an unexpected, relaxing night with my family, I began to realized many things have an expiration date. Spoiled milk, moldy bread, and lapsed car insurance all occur due to the passage of its expiration date. Other things expire slower and without an date, but they spoil just the same. Business' that lack integrity, friendships without apologies, and eternal happiness without God are just a few of the most important.
God, the next time I accidentally sip on some chunky milk or endure the lines of the B.M.V., please remind me not to neglect what is most important ... You.

Licking the Cup
"You should not lick that," I thought with a little embarrassment. My family and I were sharing communion together with the rest of our church at our Christmas weekend service. Communion is a special time of remembrance, repentance and connection to God. So as Spencer, my 6 year old son, licked the inside of his tiny plastic communion cup, somehow it seemed wrong.
I did not correct him or say anything ... and as I thought about it; I am glad I kept quiet. His action was one of innocence and even somewhat appropriate. He wanted every bit of the grape juice that his tiny cup had to offer. We can delight in every bit of what God has to offer us. As we seek after a friendship with Him, we will always be satisfied.
Spencer, keep on going after every drop.

Dirty Dishes
The sink seemed to always be full. It was not even supper time yet and I was enduring my second, time consuming task of washing dishes. This mundane task of scraping egg stained skillets, scrubbing pots, and rinsing off sippy cups and cereal bowls got me thinking of just how blessed I am.I realized that I would not have all these dishes to wash if I had not been blessed with four great children and an incredible wife. Many of those dirty dishes started with a cherished family meal. The food around our table comes from that which God provides for us. But most importantly, the dirty dinnerware reminds me of the forgiveness and redemption God provides for my sinful life.
As I reflect on the birth of Jesus this Christmas, I am thankful God takes my dirty life and continually cleans it up. Cleaning up our lives is one chore God never sees as mundane. -- Merry Christmas.

Crash
My foot gave the pedal a little too much gas and it happened. "Oh no," my mind screamed as my car began to slide off the glassy slick parking lot and into the grass. "AM I GOING TO HIT THAT TREE?! -- WILL I STOP IN TIME?! -- IS MY CAR GOING TO GET STUCK ON THIS CRUNCHY ICY GRASS?" ... My car did come to a stop, it did not hit the tree and I easily backed out off the grass . . . but in that moment, I was not sure what would happen.
The feeling of being out of control was at first exciting, then fearful and finally relieving when I knew all was safe. Our lives can sometimes feel that way. Circumstances come that are out of our control. Other situations may even tempt us to feel overwhelmed and walk in fear. During times like these, the only sure place to go to find peace and get guidance is with God. He always calms our fears and helps us put the circumstances of life into there proper perspective.
Besides, many of the stresses in my life come from hitting the gas pedal at just the wrong time.

Snuggling with Dad
"Dad, I want to hug you for awhile," my seven year old son said. As Elliott crawled up on my lap and snuggled in, my mind thought of the security and closeness we were sharing as father and son. Even though few words were exchanged, I knew the importance of these moments. No needs to be met or homework to go over, just being together.Thursday, November 27, 2008

Sweetness
Every time they are together it puts a smile on my face. Whether it is how her face lights up as she talks about her beloved husband or the way he calls her “sweetness” -- it is obvious that they have a deep love for one another. A close, intimate friendship not only still exists between Gene and Alice after 31 years of marriage, but it seems to continually grow.Their affection for one another is contagious. Other couples attempt to emulate what they see and hear. Wives are challenged to speak well of their husbands and husbands to adore their wives. Their relationship demonstrates the power of speaking and displaying selfless love and its positive, far reaching affects.
As I think of Gene and Alice, I am reminded of God’s great love for us. The power of His love is far reaching and affects us all. The many times God touches our lives is sweeter than anything. We cannot keep from speaking about Him. As we do, it brings joy to our lives … and transformation to others.

Sunday Nap
Foggy, weary and tired -- my body was demanding a nap this Sunday afternoon. I lay my groggy head and heavy legs upon our soft couch hoping to get just a few winks. I felt some sense of guilt as my wife persevering in the kitchen diligently cleaning up from lunch. However, it did not deter me from my nap.Monday, October 20, 2008
Date Night -- by Annette
As we sat in our backyard enjoying the cool Sunday afternoon weather and the laughter of our children, my husband said, "Oh, honey we were suppose to have our monthly date night tonight." We had both forgotten and realized it was to late. A few moments later, we decided to walk to a local convenience store to get snacks. Our kids rode their bikes and I leisurely enjoyed a stroll with my husband. Though our date nights usually involve dinner, a movie ... just time alone without the kids. Tonight was different. We were not alone, but as we watched our kids race up the sidewalk and enjoy a sweet snack, I realized it was just as special.

The Munster Flood
The misty, moldy smell permeated the air as we entered into the flood devastated neighborhoods of Munster. The turn toward the river brought yard after yard filled with water logged furniture, mold filled drywall, and destroyed family treasures. As we approached Elaine's house, we could she that her property was no different. This 84 year old widow had lost nearly all her possessions from the flood waters that rushed into her home. The team of seven from our church spent the next two days cleaning out wet drywall, soaked paneling, and moldy insulation. At the end of our final day, Elaine approached us with a gift. "It is all I have to give you," she said, as she handed us a half a box of chocolates. "You have saved my life," she said as we depart with a group prayer and plenty of tearful hugs.
We never preached or handed out a gospel pamphlet, but hope was imparted as we represented Jesus with love and actions. I can't wait to do it again.

Mini Marathon - Full Speed
You could feel the excitement, the energy, the anticipation. In just a mere moments, I was about to start my fifth Indy Mini-Marathon. 13.1 miles lie ahead for me and the other 35,000 runners. The chill of this spring morning nipped at my body, but my experience told me that it would only last a short time. The air temperature would soon rise along with my body temperature as the miles would click off. It was though others didn't realize this fact. All around me were runners with long sleeve shirts, even jackets. A few had small cinch sacks filled with unnecessary supplies. As I approached the 1 and 2 mile markers, I discovered the road to be littered with clothing. In addition, I noticed some runners tying unneeded apparel around their waste, impeding their pace. It reminds me of Hebrews 12:1 where it says; "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."
The clothing littering the road reminds me of those things I have tossed away, never to hinder me again. The challenge is to untie from around me those things that still entangle me. As I do, I will run unimpeded, full speed ahead after God.

Mini Marathon -- Water
My heart was beating, my legs were aching, and I felt a little light headed. 12.5 miles and 2 hour and 15 minutes of running behind me, I only had about 3/4 of a mile to go. As I approached the final of 17 aid stations, I could here the encouraging words of the aid workers.By this time I had learned to look for just the right aid worker. The ones who gripped the small cups of water made the exchange difficult and often the cups of water were dropped or spilled. The best exchange occurs when the cup is laid upon the workers hand like a cup upon a table.

Acorns
"Daddy, look what I got!", Elliott said with proud excitement. I peered into the bottom of his bucket and viewed my son's new found treasure -- Acorns. My brother and sister-in-laws yard had many. Elliott, my inquisitive son and Abbie, his fun-loving cousin enthusiastically took me outside to assist them in filling their yellow tin bucket. As the journey began I became "Daddy Squirrel" and Elliott and Abbie became "Brother and Sister Squirrel." Our vast hunt included the discovery of a snake hole, a slimy worm, and plenty of digging. As our bucket brimmed to the top, I realized that the treasure was not found in the acorns, but the time spent with each other. They did not ask for my assistance in order to speed up the collection process, but rather to enjoy the hunt together.
A long-time friend has often told me, "Enjoy the journey of life". I would only add, "Enjoy the journey with someone else."

Biggest Loser

My family and I have enjoyed watching the weight loss reality show, so I tried to remember Curtis. Elliott described him in detail until I could visualize this thinning contestant. "Oh, he is black, right?", I said with confidence. With a look of bewilderment, Elliott corrected me with a sigh, "No Dad, he is not black, he is brown."
In his description of this "brown" man, he never noticed his skin color -- only his accomplishments. My son's simple, untainted view challenged me to do the same.

Funeral

As I passed by his wedding album, many flowers, and the body that once housed Mike's wonderful spirit, I realize a great life had ended, but a legacy remains. John 13:15 states, "I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." He did much for others through his words, life, and deeds. It challenges me to do the same.

Adoption

Born five weeks early he has already faced his share of adversity. Fortunately the future is bright because of his new adoptive parents. Unexpectedly asked to take this child as their own, they eagerly volunteered. Their loving and willing sacrifice extended toward this precious infant reminded me of God's love for us. He willingly sent his son to die in order to pay the price of our adoption. Ephesians 1:5 states it well; "His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his own family by sending Jesus Christ to die for us." (Living Bible)
As I approached Eli's empty bed I was blessed to find him resting in his new mother's arms. The love in her eyes for her son was deep and eternal ... just like God's love for us.

Bagel with Cream Cheese

A stay-at-home mom, home educator of our four children, a caregiver to another two year old, and being my wife keeps her schedule overloaded with activity. Mornings are especially hectic with preparation of the classroom, feeding the family, and getting the kids ready for school.
Now, I am uncertain if I deserved this unexpected act of service, but it reminds me what Proverbs 3:27 says, "Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act." Her simple act truly blessed me that morning.
As I enjoyed my bagel, I felt privileged to have such a caring wife -- and challenged to look for small ways that I could bless others … especially her.

Flicka

I am not usually an emotional person, but this night was different. My eight year old daughter and I had just finished watching, "Flicka", a movie about the struggles of a daughter and the love of her father. As the credits were scrolling across the screen, I sat down next to Savannah who was bundled in a blanket on the living room couch.
I looked into her beautiful brown eyes and tenderly said, "Do you know that you are very special." "Yes." she said with a confident smile. With a curious tone, I asked,"Why do you know that you are special?" She simply stated, "Because you say I am and that is good enough for me." Her response warmed my heart.
Savannah believes she is special because she trusts in my words. God's words are even more trustworthy. He has a special love for me ... for all of us. The more I realize this ... the more it warms His heart.

Flat Tires

In the midst of my frustration, I realized that the situation was effecting my attitude. I paused and thought, "Was it really that terrible?" I mean ... I did have the money to pay for the repairs, none of the flats occurred in unsafe areas, and I do have a trustworthy auto repair shop to assist me. Though inconvenienced, it really was not that big of a deal.
I had a choice -- was I going to rise above the situation or allow the situation to negatively effect my attitude. The truth be told; on this occasion, I probably fell somewhere in the middle. Well, at least for a little while.

itunes

With my search complete, I am reminded of God's longing for me to search for him just as intently as I looked for that song. My focus and attention to God's words not only pleases Him, but it is profoundly beneficial to me as Proverbs 4:20,22 states - "My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words ...for they, (God's words), are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body."
It is an easy choice to listen and obey God because of the "life and health" that he gives us. However, when I fall short to fulfilling God's instructions -- I will get up and try again.

Homemade Valentine

His disappoint would be short-lived, however, as our family entered a local nursing home two days later. He grasped the simple heart-shaped valentine with anticipation, hoping that he would find someone who needed it. His goal would be accomplished as he approached the first person in his view, the nursing home's maintenance man. "Hello, happy valentines day, Jesus loves you," he said with a great big smile filled with joy. The man seemingly surprised by Spencer's boldness, but blessed by his kindness received the hand crafted gift.
Spencer's simple act of love exemplified 1 Thessalonians 5:15b where it states, "... always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else." I am often kind to the "each others" in my life -- those I know; my friends. Spencer challenged me to be kind to "everyone else".

Hot Wheels

Proverbs 14:17 tells us that "a quick-tempered man does foolish things". In my moment of frustration, I could have foolishly spoken harsh words to my boys. In reality, the hot wheel was on the floor because -- that is where you play with hot wheels. It really did not matter who left it. What matters is how I handle it ... or more truly ... how I handle myself.

Ice Cream

Later that night, as I cracked open the Bible and began to read Proverbs, I was reminded that God desires us to crave for him and his word. He instructs us to "accept... store up... turn our ear toward... apply... call out for... cry aloud for... look... and search for his words and commands. (excerpts of Proverbs 2:1-4). In other words, crave and passionately pursue him and his wisdom for our daily lives.
Our pursuit of God produces rewards that include deeper understanding of God, clearer thinking, and wiser decision making. Proverbs 2:6, "... the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding". God's offers his wisdom to us ... it is there for the taking.
I really enjoyed that bowl of cookie dough ice cream. It satisfied my tastebuds. However, it is only God that truly satisfies my spirit. The more I learn from God's word, the Bible, the more I want. I just can not get enough.

Truth

That is why today; me and a starting group of 6 men are beginning a journey of reading a chapter a day in Proverbs. Maybe you would like to join us ... we welcome you.
As you read along with us, feel free to share your insights by clicking on the comment line at the bottom of any entry and write your thoughts in the comment box. Many of these comments will be posted for others to enjoy. So, lets begin our journey.
Proverbs 1
According to the commentary in my bible, a Proverb is "a short, compact saying ... that expresses a principle ... about human behavior from God's point of you." In essence, it is wisdom. Proverbs 1:20a says, "Wisdom calls aloud in the street ..." It brings me comfort that God cares so much for me that He would make His wisdom so attainable, so clear.
Lord, I turn my ears to your call. Help me to understand and apply your truth and wisdom as you speak it to me.

The Elevator

As I enter her spacious hospital room for today's visit, I was greeted with a warm hello. I tried to keep our conversation focused on her, but she guided our visit to questions and genuine concern for others. In the midst of her pain, her selfless character shined bright.
We ended our time with prayer and I quietly departed her room. Upon reentering the elevator, I realized that though I went to encourage and bring hope to her, it is my life that was enriched the most.

My Cat

She decides when she will be picked up or stroked and when I get the privilege of her attention. If she is not in the mood to be with me, she will escape my grasp or simply ignore me. It is truly a one sided relationship.
It reminds that often I treat God the same way. I want his full attention when I desire it and can easily ignore him when he wants mine. Lord, forgive me and help me to be attentive to your desires and your guidance.

Bedtime

Most profound to me, is that God hears every word of blessing, protection, and provision that I pray over my sons. Lord, help me not to take these moments for granted.
